EL PASO, Texas —

Nearly a decade has passed since a man was gunned down in broad daylight in East El Paso. Now his alleged killer has his day in court.

Oct. 6, 2002, witnesses told police 22-year-old Mark Anthony Cedillos was kidnapped by two men from a parking lot off of Lee Trevino Drive in East El Paso. They said the men then drove Cedillos across the street, where they said it appeared he tried to get away.

One witness testified Monday, "I heard a shot. Then we heard another shot."

Police said Cedillos was shot in the chest and died.

Several witnesses driving nearby called 911 with a description of the car and a Juarez license plate number.

Monday, former El Paso police detective Jesus Pantoja, Jr. said they were able to trace the car to now 37-year-old Alfredo Holguin.

Pantoja said they also found records that show the car crossed into El Paso at just before 4 p.m. that afternoon. Police said Holguin and the other suspect, Benito Holguin, fled to Mexico.

Pantoja said on Oct. 18, 2002, he was called by officials in Juarez where Holguin was waiting to be questioned.

"He said he was celebrating his father's birthday in Juarez. Then he says he, his wife and kids went to a baseball park in Juarez," Pantoja testified.

Pantoja said the times Holguin gave him contradicted records of when his car crossed. He told the jury Holguin did admit to crossing into the U.S. that afternoon, but said when he got back to Juarez that was the last time he saw his car.

"He claims that he later finds the vehicle was stolen and contacted the police in Juarez" Pantoja testified.

He also said Juarez police have no record of Holguin calling them. Pantoja said after questioning Holguin and a witness pointing out Holguin as the gunman a warrant was issued for his arrest. That arrest wouldn't come until last year when Holguin was finally stopped by Juarez police, then extradited back to the U.S.

KFOX 14 was asked by presiding Judge Bill Hicks to not identify any of Monday's civilian witnesses.

One witness testified, "For safety reasons. I'm concerned."

Another said, "There was a lot of people showing up in front of my house."

Holguin is in custody and faces life in prison.

As for Benito, it's reported he was gunned down in Juarez in a drug-related shooting in 2009.
