EL PASO, Texas —

A spokesman for the Socorro Independent School District told KFOX14 that the district is not worried and is not launching any investigations after an external audit of San Elizario High School revealed that a former SISD employee allegedly cheated federal accountability measures.

Antonio Baca worked for SISD for more than 20 years before becoming the principal of San Elizario High School in 2008.

An external audit accuses Baca of holding back more than 50 freshmen from going to 10th-grade through a rule he created.

That rule mandated that freshmen pass Algebra 1, English 1, and earn 6.5 credits before moving on to the next grade. The audit reveals that many of the Limited English Proficient students were unable to pass those tests and couldn't move on to 10th-grade.

Therefore, those students would not count toward state-mandated sophomore-level tests that make up a school's federal rating.

Having spent so much time at SISD before his tenure at San Elizario High School, KFOX14 reached out to SISD to ask if there was any reason to believe cheating may have happened while Baca was there.

"We're not really concerned, but just among ourselves as a school district we want to ensure that all things have been done the right way. So, we're looking into internal reviews and internal audits not as a reaction to the article that ran today, but as something that the new superintendent and School Board have been discussing," said Daniel Escobar, spokesman for SISD.

Officials with the Texas Education Agency said SISD is currently not on their radar, and that no problems have been reported to them.
