DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. —

Dona Ana County Sheriff's deputies said a young girl was mauled by her father's dog Friday morning.

The attack happened around 1 a.m. on the 4100 block of Stryker Road in Las Cruces.

Officials said the child's father was getting ready for a family camping trip between 11:30 p.m. and midnight.

When the father went to check the camp trailer's tire pressure and his daughter went into the trailer with the dog, the father's Blue Heeler, bit the 4-year-old girl when she touched his head.

The girl was flown to University Medical Center in El Paso for treatment of lacerations to the right side of her face, said deputies.

The girl is expected to recover.

As per New Mexico law, the dog is under quarantine at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley for the next 10 days and will be monitored for rabies.

Officials said that after 10 days, the dog will be killed, as per state law.

Deputies said they're continuing to investigate.
