22-Year-Old Nearly Drowns In Pool

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

A 22-year-old man was taken to University Medical Center after he nearly drowned on Sunday.

The El Paso Police Department said they had to rescue the man out of La Estancia apartment complex pool in east El Paso around 6:30 a.m. since he and his friends didn't know how to swim. Officers said the individuals were all holding on to the ledge when the male somehow lost his grip and fell into the pool.

"From adults all the way down to infants, the water doesn't know any age," said Wright Stanton of the El Paso Drowning Prevention Coalition.

Wright said since no one apparently knew how to swim, then none of the individuals should have even stepped foot in the pool. But that was just one potential rule broken early Sunday. The apartment complex also had a sign notifying all swimmers that there was no lifeguard on duty and they should take caution.

Stanton said if you're not at a public pool with a proper lifeguard, then be ready for the unexpected.

"Make sure they have the necessary rescue equipment like a ring buoy, shepherd's crook or something so that you'll be able to save them just in case they get into trouble and you don't know how to swim either," said Stanton.

And at 22 years of age, Stanton said that's too many years gone by with a missed opportunity to learn how to swim.

"You learn how to prevent yourself to get into a situation where you become a drowning victim, you don't want to do that so you learn a lot of safety measures, you learn how to survive," he said.

Police said the incident was under investigation.
