2012 Susan G. Komen Race Turnout Exceeded Expectations

EL PASO, Texas —

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday in Northeast El Paso was an emotional event for many.

"We're running in memory of my wife, Julie," said Jose Avilas of Mexico. "She actually ran last year and it was a very exciting moment."

That's why thousands woke up extra early on Sunday morning, to try and raise money to find a cure for the disease. While the race was emotional for some, it was also fun for everyone, as a joyous and celebratory mood hung over the event. Everyone seemed to walk or run for a different reason.

"I started when my mom was diagnosed with cancer seven years ago," said Runner Kerstin Klingstedt of West El Paso. "Regardless of all the political issues, research is the most important part."

Recently, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation apologized for the decision pulling its funding for cancer screenings from Planned Parenthood, and reversed course.

"What has happened there has been addressed has been resolved," said Erich Morales, race chair for the El Paso Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Race for the Cure officials estimated 11,000 people participated in Sunday's event -- an event where much of the money raised will stay in the Borderland.
