LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Las Cruces Police have arrested a former deacon of the First Baptist Church who police believe secretly videotaped women and girls to create sexually explicit videos, police said.

Terry Dean Gibson, 55, was arrested Friday morning by police after a two-year investigation by the FBI and Las Cruces Police. The investigation revealed that Gibson had been videotaping women and girls, police said.

Officials said that they learned in March 2006 that a family member discovered sexually explicit videos of women and girls stored on Gibson’s computer. The family member made a copy of Gibson’s hard drive and turned the copy over to an agent with the FBI, police said.

The investigation revealed that Gibson was secretly videotaping women and girls at his backyard swimming pool and, on numerous occasions, at area stores and at the Mesilla Valley Mall, police said.

Detectives said that they learned that Gibson had a hidden camera in a briefcase that he used to videotape up the skirts of women and girls. Gibson also hosted several pool parties at his residence for his church’s youth and Bible study groups.

Gibson was charged with nine felony counts of sexual exploitation of children and is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
