19-Year-Old Shot In The Hip In Northeast El Paso

EL PASO, Texas —

A 19-year-old man was transported to William Beaumont Army Medical Center early Saturday morning for a gunshot wound to the hip.

Police believe two drivers in a heated argument started chasing each other in circles when one pulled out a gun, firing several rounds.

Esteban Vasquez, of northeast El Paso, described the startling sounds that woke him from a deep sleep around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

"I know it was shots," said Vasquez. "It was pah, pah, pah, pah, pah. Five shots I heard."

Investigators believe the victim and the shooter were driving separate cars near the intersection of Junction and Gateway North when an argument broke out.

"They actually started driving in circles and yelling and screaming at each other," said Darrel Petry, of the El Paso Police Department.

Petry said one of the drivers, a 26-year-old northeast El Paso man, pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds at the victim, the victim's car and a passenger.

The 19-year-old driver was hit in the hip, but made it to a 7-Eleven convenience store at Gateway North and Sun Valley to call 911. The victim was later transported to William Beaumont Army Medical Center.

Petry said the 26-year-old fled the scene in a Chrysler 300.

"They do have an individual in custody," said Petry. "What we're waiting for is for the the proper charges to be filed."
