$18 Billion Dollar Deficit Plagues Texas

EL PASO, Texas —

Both gubernatorial candidates are making stops in El Paso on the heels of Tuesday's election.

Thursday evening, Democratic challenger Bill White went door-to-door looking for support and Gov. Rick Perry with be making a stop Friday evening.

"We want them to come here and support us and the state of Texas," said Abel Valenzuela, of east El Paso.

The latest polls show Perry leading the race with 49 percent of the vote and Bill White with 37 percent.

Whoever wins will have to tackle an $18 billion deficit. Most Texans agree, to balance the budget there needs to be cuts.

"It's hard to say to cut certain things, wars, pandemics, a lot of stuff, people should come first," said Valenzuela.

In a recent poll, 28 percent of Texans said universities and junior colleges should be cut, 12 percent said public safety, health and services was next on the chopping block with 7 percent. And 4 percent of Texans said funding for public schools can be done away with. El Pasoans living on the border said that’s all stuff that is needed.

"We need education and public safety is a real big thing now dealing with Juarez," said Krys Fakir, of east El Paso.

If funding stays in place for education and safety there would need to be an increase in revenue for the state.

In that same poll 11 percent of Texans said the state should allow new forms of gambling and 42 percent said raise taxes on alcoholic beverages. El Pasoans said those are good ideas.

"Drunk driving that we could stop," said Fakir.

Perry is going for his unprecedented third term.

He is leading in every region except the southwest, because El Paso is considered a blue county in a red state.
