Are cancer screenings really a waste?

El Paso, Texas —

A new evaluation from Consumer Reports is claiming that most cancer screening tests are a waste of time and money.

Of course, for some test and patients, the benefits do outweigh the risks; but for many other screenings and tests, the magazine found that the line between benefit and risk is not clear cut.

Exams for bladder, lung, pancreatic, ovarian, prostate, testicular, oral and skin cancer are among the tests they claim shouldn't be done.

We brought the latest from consumer reports to Dr. Portillo from Texas oncology to see where he stands with what they have to say.

"Why should we screen for skin cancer? Because it's easy, it's not expensive and all you have to do is go up and see the doc - or the dermatologist," Portillo said.

Consumer Reports does agree that cervical, colon and breast cancer exams are the most effective.

As per the magazine "the message that you have nothing to lose and everything to gain from being screened - simply isn't true.

Many of the tests are expensive; a test like ovarian cancer -- there isn't a test invasive enough to detect it."

Portillo did agree that not all cancer screening will detect cancer: "There's no good way to screen for ovarian cancer unfortunately,  I wish there was but we don't have one."

The Consumer Reports investigation, which screened more than ten thousand readers - found many were getting tests they didn't need.

"Yes there's some we can screen, there's some that we should not screen for, and then there's some in which only a few members of the population should be screened for," Portillo said.

These recommendations are for those who are healthy with no symptoms or risk factors.

But at the end of the day it's a conversation you should have between you and your physician.
