EL PASO COUNTY, Texas -- Sparks resident Laura Tena said she would like to see more stop signs on intersections in her neighborhood. She said she is worried about letting her 3-year-old daughter play in her front yard while having to watch out for reckless drivers.

"The cars run through here really fast. They have almost run over me twice. It's not only my problem, it's a lot of myneighbors' problems as well," Tena said.

The El Paso County Roads and Bridges Department said residents can request stop signs through its office, but an intersection must meet certain criteria for the county to install one.

According to the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the location where a stop sign is requested must have one of the following conditions:

-The traffic volumes on the street or highway exceed 6,000 vehicles per day

-A restricted view exists that requires road users to stop in order to see oncoming traffic

-Show that three or more crashes that could have been prevented with a stop sign have been reported within 12-month period, or that five or more such crashes have been reported within a two-year period

El Paso County Public Works Director Ernesto Carrizal said the Roads and Bridges Department works with the El Paso County Sheriff's Department to obtain data on crashes. Carrizal also said residents can request speed bumps and street lights through the county, but it is more difficult to install a light.

"We have only enough money to do 50 lights a year, so we try to provide them throughout the county, not in one specific area," Carrizal said.

If you would like to request a stop sign, speed bump or street light in your neighborhood, contact El Paso County Roads and Bridges at 915-546-2015.
