Report: El Paso's 79936 is most populated ZIP code in U.S.Updated: Wednesday, September 4 2013, 12:39 PM MDT By: Stacey WelshEL PASO, Texas -- A recent report from the AARP estimates the 79936 ZIP code in East El Paso is the most populated ZIP code in the U.S. The report states 79936 has 116,860 residents, beating out 90011 in Los Angeles, with about 108,000 residents, and 60629 in Chicago, with about 106,000. The area includes busy intersections like Montwood Drive and North Zaragosa Road, and more people means more traffic.El Paso Department of Transportation Director Ted Marquez said the city is adjusting to traffic patterns on the growing east side. "We do traffic studies and we either install traffic devices, traffic signals and roundabouts to handle some of the congestion," Marquez said. Marquez also encourages residents to take advantage of public transportation. The Transportation Department said the Montwood Drive and Joe Battle Boulevard intersection sees some of the heaviest traffic flow in the city.East side resident Nancy Garay told KFOX14 she tries to avoid running errands on Friday or Saturday. "I just go Monday, Tuesday. That's the best," Garay said. Horizon City resident Demian Garcia also said he plans to do his shopping in East El Paso at night when the traffic is lighter. The Texas Department of Transportation is also working to expand highways in East El Paso. One project that could be a solution to increased traffic is construction on the Zaragosa Direct Connectors. They will move traffic directly to Joe Battle from North Zaragosa without having to exit at Montwood. That project costs more than $25 million and is expected to be finished this November.Another project that could begin as early as August is adding one lane in each direction on Interstate 10 from McRae Boulevard to Zaragosa Road. Further east, TXDOT is working on construction to add three new ramps to the Americas Interchange. The interchange project is slated to finish in 2015.TXDOT Public Information Officer Blanca del Valle said Eastside drivers can also expect closures starting Wednesday to accommodate construction on the North Zaragosa Direct Connector project. Northbound lanes on Joe Battle (Loop 375) will be closed between Vista del Sol and Pebble Hills Boulevard beginning Wednesday at 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. Southbound lanes on Joe Battle (Loop 375) will also be closed between Pebble Hills and Vista del Sol starting Thursday at 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.Report: El Paso's 79936 is most populated ZIP code in U.S.
