EL PASO, Texas – An exit ramp near the University of Texas at El Paso is scheduled to close, which means commuters will have to seek an alternate route for more than two weeks.

The eastbound Porfirio Diaz exit ramp off Interstate 10 will be closed beginning Friday and is expected to reopen March 23.

The foundation work for the new Spur 1966 project is why the Porfirio Diaz exit ramp is set to close, according to spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation Blanca Del Valle.

As an alternate route, drivers will have to use Schuster Avenue or the downtown exit to get around the construction area.

For some drivers this means backup, delays and more traffic.

“Lately it’s been kind of a hassle because they’ve been making us go around a lot of the places and it takes us longer. So yeah, it kind of bothers us,” said west El Pasoan Enok Bordier.

Others drivers told KFOX14 they are OK with the delays as long as it makes improves El Paso’s roadways.

“I’m all for waiting and as long as there’s progression, and there has been. So far, I have no problem with it at all,” said northeast El Paso resident Micah Mitchell.

The Spur 1966 project will connect Schuster Avenue and Paisano Drive so motorists can travel along a bridge to get across Interstate 10.

The Porfirio Diaz exit ramp will close at Friday at 6 p.m.

The Spur 1966 project set to be completed by the fall.
