EL PASO, Texas— Commuting time on Delta Drive will get shorter once an overpass is built at the railroad tracks.

The Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority and Texas Department of Transportation met Wednesday and agreed to build that overpass.

Many area businesses are hoping the overpass produces positive changes.

"In the morning and in the afternoon during the busy hours, this little street is always congested. It will be a very good idea and the cars will be going through another way,” said Socorro Hidalgo, employee of David Glasses and Mirrors.

Hidalgo says traffic on surrounding streets gets congested when drivers try to avoid Delta Drive so they don't have to wait for the train to pass. That means more headaches on everyone’s commute.

"They have to go all the way around because there are lots of stop signs here and they have to find another way to get through faster," Hidalgo said.

The overpass should benefit both drivers and those on foot. Many nearby residents and students from Bowie High School walk through the area.

“Yeah, I think they’re going to be able to get around much faster. They don’t have to wait and it’s better for school, so they won’t be late, especially for people that work around that area. It’ll be better,” said Abel Franco, Central resident.

It’s an $8 million project set to be complete in summer 2015.
