Neighbors dealing with aftermath of east El Paso car crash

Updated: Wednesday, September 4 2013, 12:39 PM MDT

EL PASO, Texas -- People who live near a sharp curve on Dick Mayers Drive in east El Paso said Tuesday morning's crash is one of several they have seen in the past five years.

As KFOX14 previously reported, the crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. The El Paso Police Department said it arrested two men in connection with the crash; one on suspicion of drunk driving and the other on outstanding warrants.

One family member said she is worried about her grandparents living in their house right next to the curve.

"It's scary because they live by themselves, and it's scary to think what could happen. If that boat wasn't right there, who knows? It could have gone in the house. It was like that close," Nicole Schaffer said.

Schaffer and other neighbors who did not want to give their names or go on camera told KFOX14 the latest crash is a reminder that the sharp curve needs more than street lights to alert drivers. Neighbors also said the city installed one light near the curve about a year ago after receiving complaints.

"Maybe reduce the speed? I'm not sure, because apparently that little light doesn't help. There needs to be more light, the speed humps, reflectors, everything, because it's happened way too many times," Schaffer said.

The city said people can request these safety measures online, by calling its office or by calling 311. El Paso Transportation Director Ted Marquez said requesting something like speed bumps would only take about 30 days to install, but the time frame varies with major construction.

However, Marquez said possibly lowering the speed limit would not be a go-to option.

"One of the things that happens is the speed limit won't stop anybody from speeding. It just gives the police officer the ability to cite someone," Marquez said.
