EL PASO, Texas Drivers at a central El Paso intersection are frustrated due to an issue with the lack of turning lanes.

The wait time for drivers to turn left is longer at the intersection of Montana Avenue and Piedras Street due to the lack of a left turn lane.

There is a safe green-light arrow signaling to turn left, but it is shared with a lane that allows for traffic to go straight. What happens more often than not is drivers who want to turn are behind vehicles wishing to go straight. When the turning driver's turn emerges, the protected arrow is long gone.

The result ends in traffic backed up on eastbound Montana Avenue. It is a headache for both drivers that plan on turning northbound on Piedras Street or continue on Montana Avenue. This also increases the chance for accidents in the area.

"It's pretty bad. They often have a lot of accidents on the intersection," said Nina Jasso, a pedestrian that often walks in the area.

Drivers aren't the only ones who are worried.

"It's very risky because it is congested and the elderly walk about in the area and it's bad," said Jasso.

There are possible solutions: Anyone can request a traffic study through the El Paso Department of Transportation. The department will research the area and decide whether changes need to be made.

"We can look at the number of vehicles that are making a left turn versus the amount that are going straight through in both directions. The number of lanes that we have and the collisions if any that we have in that location and then based on that information, we'll make a recommendation," said Ted Marquez, the director of the El Paso Department of Transportation.

EPDOT would then be responsible for any construction or changes done to the intersection.

The number to call to have a traffic study done on a street is 311.
