EL PASO, TEXAS - Students at Franklin High School are mourning after a deadly crash killed their classmate.

The impact of the deadly racing crash split the car in two along Resler and Black Ridge drives.

The Alonzo Perez, 16, was behind the wheel and later died of his injuries.

Friday afternoon, fellow classmates of Perez and the passenger, Irvins Parba gathered at the crash site. A vase with yellow flowers was placed where one side of the car was mangled around a traffic signal pole.

Perez didn't survive the crash.

Investigators believe Perez was racing another car, lost control and then slammed into a traffic signal pole. The impact of the crash caused the school zone speed limit sign to fall off the post.

El Paso said the car they were racing against briefly stopped after the crash but took off before police got there.

Both 16-year-old boys were taken to University Medical Center where Perez died. Parba is being treated for his injuries.

El Paso Independent School District Juan Cabrera released a statement Friday:

“It is tragic when a young life is taken away from us. We extend our thoughts and sincere condolences to all of the families involved and the Franklin community. Our counselors are available to listen and comfort students needing assistance."

Students KFOX14 spoke with said it’s been a tough day at school.

"It's really bad right now at school. A lot of people are depressed. And the classes are really quiet. I saw a lot of teachers crying today. Something I had never seen before," said student Allyson Ornelas.
Police believe the car that took off is a silver Mitsubishi.

Anyone with more information on the crash is asked to call police at 915-564-7140. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 915-566-8477
