EL PASO, Texas -- The El Paso City Council voted to restrict more parking near downtown apartments because of the new ballpark. Permits are already in place for apartments in other parts of downtown, but the City Council voted to expand that to the Old San Francisco District Tuesday.

The area includes streets like West Missouri Avenue and Coldwell Street. Some people living there said the change can't come soon enough.

"It's really important for us, and for me personally, to have the parking spot at least within the vicinity, not down the block or around the corner. I do have a young son," downtown El Paso resident Carla Briones said.

The city will designate some areas for residential parking, and people will have to display a sticker to park in those areas.

"The City Council did not want residents of that area to have to fight for parking with people coming to baseball games or other things happening at the stadium," El Paso Development Director Matthew McElroy said.

McElroy said the decision also means the city will not add more metered parking in the Old San Francisco District.

The permits cost $30 each, but people will have to pay an extra $200 if they want a permit for another car registered under their name.

However, the city said this change is not in effect immediately.

"Permits are available at the city's one-stop shop. The only thing that will have to happen is we'll have to coordinate with the transportation department to get signs up. That will be about two to three weeks," McElroy said.

The city plans to let people living in that area know about the permit program via notices in the mail.

The permits are not required, but if residents choose not to buy one, they will have to follow the same parking restrictions as downtown visitors.
