EL PASO, Texas- The numbers of deaths during a traffic collision involving alcohol and driving while intoxicated is on the rise, according to reports by the El Paso Police Department.

In 2013, a total of 41 people died in an alcohol-related collision compared to 2012 when 25 people died.

DWI Task Force of the police department reported the number of DWI arrests made increased as well.

"It's a significant increase when you look at the percentages. When you compare the 25 and 41, yes, that is a significant rise," said Darrel Petry, spokesman for El Paso Police Department.

A total of 2,734 arrest were made were made in 2013 compared with 2012 with 2,698 cases.

"We do see that there is a significant spike in the number of DWIs by drivers," Petry said.

For some people, the punishment is not enough. Repeat offenders with three or more DWI arrests had a significant increase. In 2013, 925 DWI arrest cases were in comparison to 708 in 2012. The two years had a large spike compared with 2011 when only 162 cases were made for those with 3 DWI arrests or more.

"When you look at the cost of a cab ride home versus all those extenuating costs, it's just no comparison. The cab ride home is the much wiser choice," Petry said.

Many El Pasoans have advice of their own when drivers go out and drink.

"I give my keys to the key master (friend) or something or I just wouldn't drink if I had to drive," said Diego Munoz of west El Paso.

No DUI El Paso offers free rides home to anyone that cannot drive after drinking. Those in need of a ride home can call 877-366-7604.

"If you see someone at the bar thats not drinking responsibly just call a cab for them or let people at the bar know. Its just a matter of having a responsible driver," said El Pasoan Vickie Pando.

No DUI El Paso has noticed a slight increase in people calling for rides in the past year, according to its founder, Tyler Rouse.

Free rides from No DUI El Paso will continue in 2014.
