CULBERSON COUNTY, Texas - An El Paso man was airlifted to an area hospital with serious injuries after crashing into an 18-wheeler overnight.

Julio Hernandez, 27, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 in Culberson County, Texas.

The crash occurred 1.5 miles east of Van Horn, Texas around 1 a.m. Thursday.

Sheriff's Deputy Oscar Carillo told KFOX14 Hernandez apparently fell asleep behind the wheel and rear-ended an 18-wheeler.

Carillo said the 18-wheeler driver was alerted by other motorists on the road that he was dragging the pickup truck.

It took emergency crews about an hour to pull out Hernandez from the vehicle, said the sheriff’s official.

At this time there is no word on Hernandez’s current condition.
