EL PASO, Texas -- As fans cheered on the USA in the World Cup game on Tuesday, excitement filled Brew Pub Bar in east El Paso.

Fans said the one thing that would make them more excited was if there was a Major League Soccer team in El Paso.
"I think that's awesome," said Analisa Sanchez, a resident from East El Paso. "I mean that would be great for everybody."

"It's good sport for the kids and the community," said Daniel Alvarado, a resident from East El Paso.

Alan Ledford, president of MountainStar Sports Group, said his organization is still in the "infancy" stages of in the process of bringing an MLS team to El Paso.

It is still unknown what entities they would work with to build a stadium.

"Because the process is evolving, we would certainly work with MLS to ensure that the timeline is a logical one.

Ledford said building the stadium downtown near the border has its advantages.

"Mexico is a country where soccer is the favorite sport and of course there are hundreds of soccer fans in El Paso," Ledford said.

Ledford added that if fans show up in a large number at this Sunday’s Chivas game at the Sun Bowl, it will put El Paso ahead in the running.

"It's an opportunity for this region to demonstrate that there is significant interest in professional soccer at this level," Ledford said.

Soccer fans said they are hopeful and that a Major League Soccer team is on its way.

"I think right now with the soccer fever and everyone getting into soccer and going to the games and bars and stuff," said Jason Rascon, a resident from east El Paso. “I definitely think people will go see them just to show support.”

Tickets are going to be on sale until game time on Sunday.

Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or at the ticket office at the University of Texas El Paso.

Tickets range anywhere from $20 - $100.

The match is scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
