EL PASO, Texas - MountainStar Sports Group today announced plans to pursue a Major League Soccer franchise for El Paso.

Soccer fans from all over El Paso were blown away by the news as they packed local bars to watch Monday's World Cup game.

"It's about time," said Gregg Bush, a soccer fan from west El Paso. "I think it's incredible, we have the fans to support it, it'll be great."

Toni Reteria has been watching soccer for more than 30 years. The west El Paso resident said she would attend a game once a week if a Major League Soccer team came to the Borderland.

"I love the whole concept of it, just what it takes to maneuver a ball with your feet, and your head and all that," Reteria said."I think it would be a great thing for El Paso. We have a baseball team, so why not a soccer team?"

Valentin Quintero is a high school soccer coach in central El Paso. He said the Borderland is a perfect place for an MLS team because of the strong soccer following in our area and the fact that El Paso is a bi-national city.

"It's one thing that a lot of Mexican fans, El Paso fans, and American fans come together to share those moments," Quintero said. "If we bring an MLS team to El Paso, it's going to be one of the best teams out there, there's a lot of talent just in this city alone."

MountainStar Sports Group said one thing El Pasoans can do to show their support is to attend a soccer exhibition match this July at the Sun Bowl.

"They want to see if El Paso can handle something like that, but if we have our own professional team, soccer is the sport for it to be and I think there'll be lots of support," Quintero said.

"We make noise, whether it be here in the Sun Bowl or a brand new soccer specific stadium in El Paso, I'm all for major league soccer in El Paso, Texas," Bush said.

The exhibition match will be between Club Deportivo Guadalajara, known as the Chivas, and the Brazilian team Cruzeiro Esporte Clube. It is scheduled for July 6 in the Sun Bowl.
