Storm flooding damages Upper Valley business

EL PASO, Texas -- Many parts of west El Paso, the Upper Valley, and Sunland Park are still underwater after a powerful thunderstorm rolled through Tuesday evening, flooding streets and causing water damage to local businesses.

One of those businesses is Old West Shoe Shine, at the intersection of Doniphan and Hillside drives.

Old West's owner, Lazaro Calderon, told KFOX14 he was inside his business last night when the storm hit, and he said it was three hours of nonstop down-pouring rain.

The inside of Old West was a mess -- water damage on almost all of the property inside, leaky ceilings and muddied floors. The water line on the walls was more than 16 inches off of the ground.

"Kids were swimming on the street last night," Calderon said. "The water came when the trucks came out, the big trucks caused waves, big waves, they hit the door closed. It was terrible, but thank God I'll be OK. No, no accidents. We'll be OK."

Calderon and his sister spent all morning trying to clean up the mess and worried more storms could be on the way.

"I'm going to put something on the doors, close the doors and everything to secure it. I want to be sure tonight," Calderon said. "I'm looking at about a thousand dollars in damage so far."

KFOX14 spotted city crews all over the Upper Valley on Wednesday, pumping water out from flooded areas and dumping it in canals and reservoirs.
