EL PASO, Texas -- The number of people signing up for Obamacare in the Borderland is on the rise.

After a rocky start in October, more people are working through the glitches and signing up for affordable health care.

According to Health and Human Services, 118,532 individuals signed up for Obamacare through Dec. 28.

In New Mexico 7,688 people have enrolled.

The report showed that 2.2 million Americans have enrolled in Obamacare.

Enroll El Paso has assisted more than 9,500 El Pasoans with enrollment.

The amount of individuals who signed up nationwide in the month of December was five times the amount of people who enrolled in October.

The same data also showed that 74 percent of those who enrolled in Texas selected a plan with some kind of financial assistance.

Roy Ortega, community relations manager for Project Amistad, said they've assisted at least 700 people since October and a majority of them have signed up with some type of tax credit based on their income.

"A lot of folks don't realize that the federal government does give them a federal subsidy," Ortega said. "It will help bring their monthly premiums to an affordable level. They are very surprised when they realize that subsidy is in some cases very substantial."

Marcos Cardona, 19, enrolled in Obamacare with his family at Project Amistad.

The Cardona family is eligible for a tax credit of up to $500 a month -- something they didn't know until they came in.

"In my opinion everyone deserves insurance because everyone gets sick," Cardona said. "Everyone has a certain condition and it's something that everyone should have. Knowing that anything can happen at any given time, it does give me a peace of mind knowing that I'm covered."

The deadline to enroll in Obamacare is March 31.
