EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso man is locked up after police say he tried to murder his wife.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. Saturday at The Citadel, an east El Paso apartment complex.
According to neighbors what started out as a small fight between 21-year-old Mariza Shaffa and her husband, Geomel Shaffa, quickly escalated into something scary.
"They were arguing outside and he popped both her back tires. I don't know what the situation was, but I'm pretty sure that's because he didn't want her to leave," said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous.
The unidentified neighbor told KFOX14 the two have a baby, they're both soldiers at Fort Bliss and they argue constantly.
"They just bickered and argued, and always had parties and drinking," said the neighbor.
This time the argument was taken to a new level.
"They heard screaming and then the screaming stopped, and they looked and they saw that she was over the ledge and that he tossed her," said the neighbor.
Shaffa was reportedly thrown from a third-story balcony. Police said they found her lying in gravel. She was later taken to Del Sol Medical Center where she was treated for serious injuries to her rib, head, upper back and lung.
"She had her spine severed and that she had to get surgery on her brain because she had a brain bleed," said the neighbor.
Those who knew the couple didn't have anything nice to say about the husband. According to police reports his anger didn't stop with his wife. While being taken into custody, he reportedly pulled away from patrol officers, attempting to fight them off. He then struck one officer in the face with a closed fist.
"Probably send her flowers just so she knows that people care because it's important and no one deserves something like that, ever, no matter the situation," said the neighbor.
Geomel Shaffa is in the El Paso County Detention Facility. He's charged with criminal attempt murder, assault on a public servant and resisting arrest.
