EL PASO, Texas – A car accident near Interstate 10 at Piedras caused the interstate to be shut down in both directions for several hours.
Dispatchers said they received reports of a downed light pole and wires just after 5 p.m., which led to the interstate being completely closed.
“Everything was fine and then we just saw this Spark. It was this loud popping noise and then the light pole just started bouncing and it was crazy,” passenger Alexandra Boccaccio said while watching crews clear the power line on I-10.
“You saw the spark. It was really big,” Angela Jaquez said, who was driving to the Lower Valley coming from work Downtown.
Traffic on I-10 was bumper to bumper, and police said Gateway East Boulevard in that area was also closed.
I-10 west opened at about 6:40 p.m. and within an hour, I-10 east opened up. Traffic was still backed up to the Sunland Park area, several miles from the incident.
El Paso Electric officials said about 1,700 customers were without power because of the accident.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
