EL PASO, Texas- More lanes will be added to a busy part of an El Paso freeway.
TxDot told KFOX14 why it decided to make the change and commuters sound off on the plan.
"Fort Bliss has grown so much and more people are coming in everyday," said Blanca Del Valle, a spokesperson for TxDot.
That's why, TxDot believes the improvements to this particular part of the freeway are necessary.
"The increase, the volume of traffic is just you know, impossible. Almost impossible. We don't want it to get there," Del Valle said.
One lane in each direction will be added to Purple Heart Memorial Highway between the Spur and Montana.
"Then we'll add frontage roads which are very necessary. If you drive by you'll see it's all dirt, we'll have frontage roads and then on the west side of the loop, we'll have a hike and bike trail," Del Valle said.
Some commuters feel the widening of the freeway is crucial.
"In the mornings, like between 8 and 9 a.m., it's bad. That Montana, it's a lot of traffic," said one commuter.
Others think it's a waste.
"There's not a lot of traffic. Maybe when there is more traffic it'll be necessary," said another.
TxDot will hold several more open houses to get public input on the project.
"Safety is always our number one priority," Del Valle said.
