By: Bill Melugin EL PASO, Texas --The Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority approved a project on Wednesday that would add a new overpass and frontage roads in between the exits of Executive and Sunland Park.
The overpass would connect I-10 to Mesa street using Mesa Park street near the new Montecillo apartments.
Mesa Park street will be extended through the desert and connect to I-10 in an effort to reduce congestion and traffic in the area.
Eastbound drivers on I-10 who want to get to Executive will have to use the new Mesa Park exit because the current one will be eliminated.
"This new overpass would serve as an interchange that would help distribute the traffic that is currently coming down Executive center trying to get on and off I-10, so it would certainly help all the local traffic," said Eduardo Calvo, the director of planning for the El Paso branch of the Texas Department of Transportation.
The project will cost an estimated $25 million, and construction could begin by the end of 2014.
"I think it's fantastic, it's good for our growth, especially with all the traffic here," said Carla Rayos. "I'll definitely be using it, because when there's accidents I think it will be a good way to get out."
