EL PASO, Texas -- Two west side high school rivals faced off in a state championship hockey game Wednesday.

Franklin and Coronado went head to head in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League state championship.

"I'm just pumped to be here supporting my school and my friends," said Sam Goldfarb, a Coronado student.

Both club teams play in a New Mexico league because traveling to other major cities in Texas just isn't practical.

The two hometown teams were the last ones standing after last weekend's state tournament.

"Well our son plays for Franklin and this is the first time they have the Franklin hockey team playing in New Mexico like Coronado, so this is the championship, so that's why we're here! We're excited," said Elena Acosta.

"It's exciting to see my son out there play and I'm just a proud dad," said Arturo Acosta.

Though these kids are rivals on the ice today, they're no strangers.

"They're really strong teams. These kids normally skate together on a travel team so they're really strong competitors anyway, so it was nice to see the two teams develop," Acosta said.

Parents I spoke with tonight hope more local kids take interest in the sport.

"Actually we're really proud of the coaches here in El Paso because they've developed a really strong program -- so it's a great opportunity for El Paso," Acosta said.

"It's something very different and something the kids really enjoy and love and it's a lot of fun," said Michelle Jones.

Coronado ultimately won the game 5-1.
