EL PASO, Texas -- KFOX14 has obtained the details of what police say happened during the Wednesday night stabbing of a woman who is nine months into her pregnancy.
According to El Paso police, Corey Bernard Moss, a 19-year-old Fort Bliss soldier, went to the home of 31-year-old Rachel Poole in the 9400 block of Wichita Circle to confront her about money he owed her.
Poole wasn't home, so Moss allegedly broke in trough her back door and hid inside the home until she returned.
When Poole came home, police say she began FaceTiming on the phone with her husband, who neighbors say is a soldier currently deployed overseas.
Police say while that was happening, Moss attacked Poole from behind with a stainless steel knife.
The affidavit says Poole immediately recognized Moss during the attack, and began screaming his name to her husband over the phone.
Police say her husband could hear the entire struggle.
Police say Moss continued to beat and stab Poole, then fled the scene and called a coworker to come pick him up, and drive him to Fort Bliss.
Police say Poole's husband called other coworkers of Moss, who then confronted him upon his arrival back to the base.
Those coworkers found the knife used in the attack in the same vehicle Moss was a passenger in.
During this time, Poole was able to call 911, and when police arrived, she gave her attacker's identity to officers.
Fort Bliss military police took Moss into custody, and later turned him over to El Paso police.
Police say Moss provided a voluntary statement where he admitted to stabbing and beating Poole.
Poole was admitted into a local hospital with several stab wounds, and fractures to her face and body that require surgery.
Police say her unborn child is in good condition, though Poole's current condition is unknown, it was last listed as critical.
Neighbors told KFOX14 Poole was about a week away from her due date.
Moss was arrested on a charge of criminal attempted murder, and booked into El Paso County Detention Center with a bond of $60,000.
Poole's husband posted a picture of his wife's attacker on his Facebook page, and asked the public to help police catch him while he is deployed.
He also posted asking which hospital his wife was at, and it appears he and other families are flying into El Paso in the coming hours and days.
Police did not mention whether or not doctors had to deliver Poole's baby.
Neighbors told KFOX14 they believe the reason Moss owed money to Poole is because her husband allegedly allowed him to use one of his vehicles while he is on deployment, and damage had been done to the vehicle, though this has not been confirmed by police, who only listed the possible motive as money owed to the victim because of "vehicle repairs".
Fort Bliss confirmed to KFOX14 that Moss is a private in the Army, and released the following statement.
"We confirm that an incident
involving a Fort Bliss Soldier occurred last night. The incident is under investigation and, as such, we cannot provide any
details. We are also unable to speculate as to what may have taken place. The
investigation into this matter is being conducted by the El Paso Police
Department and Fort Bliss is cooperating fully. We pride ourselves on the
professionalism of the Soldiers within our ranks. Behavior such as these alleged
actions are not representative of the men and women who serve at Fort
Bliss. Our immediate concern is for the safety and welfare of the victim. We
are monitoring her condition and our thoughts and prayers are with her for a
full and quick recovery,"
