LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A police K-9 was stabbed by a man early Monday morning as police responded to a report of a suspicious man.

Around 1 a.m., officers headed out to a neighborhood near Lynn Middle School where a man was reportedly lying on the ground.

Alan Golden, 23, was carrying a large knife and refused to drop it, police said. He then sat down on a curb, held the knife to his own throat and enticed officers to shoot him, police said.

Police said officers deployed beanbag rounds in an attempt to force Golden to drop the knife, and at the same time, a K-9 engaged Golden.

During a struggle, Golden stabbed Dave, a 6-year-old Dutch shepherd, several times and created a deep wound, police said. Officers used a Taser in order to subdue Golden.

Dave, who had been with the Police Department for four years, received five staples to close the deep wound, and he is currently in the care of his handler, a six-year officer with the department.

Golden was taken to University Medical Center in El Paso for the injuries he received from the K-9, and a warrant was obtained for his arrest upon his release.

Golden was charged with a fourth-degree felony for causing serious injury to the service dog, police said.
