SOCORRO, Texas -- Socorro High School students are taking care of one of their own after devastating flooding last week.

Families displaced by the flooding are finding shelter with the Red Cross at the school, and Jose Lopez, a student at the school, hasn't been in the hallways lately.

Instead, he's spent the last week trying to salvage his home after more than a foot of mud moved in.

Jose and his family are still staying in one of the high school's gyms for now, but his fellow Bulldogs are banding together to try and help the family who lost almost everything to the floods.

The high school's ROTC students went out this past weekend to begin digging the family out. The floods buried everything, including the family's cars.

Lopez said his family had to climb to their roof to wait out the storm as the mud filled their home.

Students have donated clothes, shoes and other household items.

"It feels nice because you can see this world has nice people. They touch their hearts to help us," said Lopez.

Still, there is a lot of work to be done. Many of the rooms are still covered in deep mud.

Volunteers plan to help the family this weekend and Socorro students will be back on Sunday to try and dig the home out.
