Animal Rescue League Still Recovering After Floods

Posted: 7:38 pm MDT September 26, 2006

An 8-month-old rottweiler is one of the lucky pets that gets to go to a home of his own.

"They're going to be very excited. I'm very excited," said Terri Medrano about her family.

But for dozens of other cats and dogs, the Animal Rescue League is their home for now. But last month their home was flooded.

"All my outside pans, my barn area, everything was underwater for 10 days. Then it was nothing but a mud bath," said Animal Rescue League director Loretta Hyde.

Hyde said she had to move all the dogs to one side of the shelter. Some of the large dogs had to be put in crates.

"It was a mess. You can imagine, you can't let dogs out to go potty for 10 days. You have to scoop and clean and disinfect and be on top of that situation," said Hyde.

Because all the animals were together, there was an outbreak of kennel cough and an outbreak of ringworm in their cattery. Animal Rescue had to close for two weeks, and in that time revenue was not coming in. But the bills for medicine and food were.

"By the time you spend that money and don't have money from adoptions coming in, it's like you have to count every penny you get," said Hyde.

Life at the Animal Rescue is just now going back to normal, but they need your help more than ever.
