July 13, 2006 -- One man is dead, and another is in a hospital. Traffic investigators believe street racing may be to blame.
It's an area in which residents said young drivers tend to street race. They said drivers speed out of control and innocent bystanders tend to get caught in the way.
It was a horrific crash scene on Doniphan on Thursday, with the front end of a maroon Ford pickup truck mangled to pieces and a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 unrecognizable. Investigators now believe the Camaro was responsible.
Investigators believe the Camaro was racing another vehicle, a dark Sedan, up Doniphan when the driver lost control and drove into opposing traffic. They said that's when the driver slammed head-on into the truck.
The driver of the Camaro died at the scene. He is identified as Arturo Vasquez, 26, from Anthony, N.M.
Investigators said that amazingly, the driver of the truck walked away from the crash with no injuries. His passenger was airlifted to a hospital with serious internal and head injuries.
Sheriff's investigators are now looking for the dark car they believe Vasquez was racing.
