May 9, 2006 -- Federal agents showed up Tuesday morning at 1414 Allen Bradley in East El Paso to search the main plant at the National Center for Employment of the Disabled.
About 65 agents with the FBI, IRS and two other federal agencies executed a search warrant and confiscated documents and computer information.
"We had a search warrant and I can't get into the details of any of the allegations because the search warrant is sealed," said FBI agent Andrea Simmons.
Joe Wardy, president and CEO of the NCED, issued a statement on Tuesday. It read: "The NCED Board of Directors and management has been cooperating fully and will continue to do so."
As KFOX reported, the company came under fire after allegations surfaced regarding the number of severely disabled employees doing the work for contracts for Army combat uniforms and chemical warfare protective suits. The requirement is that 75 percent of the work should be performed by severely disabled workers, but currently less than 8 percent are doing the work.
In a letter employees received in March 28, the CEO wrote: "In the absence of new orders all employees with the Army combat uniform department will be laid off by May 19."
So far 973 NCED employees have been laid off. It's expected between 35 to 40 more will lose their job on Thursday.
"There's a lot of uncertainty, we just don't know what's going to happen," said Juana Flores, an NCED employee of four years.
As the May 19 deadline approaches, the concern of employees elevates.
"If they close abruptly, what are we gonna do? My husband and I both work here, we're going to lose our house, if we get laid off," said employee Maria Najera.
