Drought Decreases Lake Level

April 2, 2006 -- Each year Elephant Butte Lake draws thousands of visitors , but 2006 could look dim.
According to a state engineer, the lake is expected to recede from 18 percent capacity on Memorial Day to 4 percent by Labor Day. It's the result of one of the worst droughts ever recorded in the state.
"I think it's going to drive the economy down and it's not going to make the lake as much fun," said J.R. Burton, a Silver City resident.
Although visitors are pessimistic, state park officials are turning their attention to other events to keep the crowds coming. They already have a handful of activities planned.
"We just look at it as a different way that we manage the lake," said Elephant Butte State Park Superintendent Mike Ormand.
