Hudspeth County Incursion Latest

Posted: 8:12 pm MST March 21, 2006

Border Patrol agents now know who was really involved in a confrontation between Texas Law Enforcement and alleged drug smugglers in Sierra Blanca.

"All the evidence they have gathered from the investigation points to the individuals and the equipment that was involved was in fact not government of Mexico or military equipment," said National Chief Patrol Agent David Aguilar.

On January 22nd, Hudspeth County deputies say they were pursuing drug smugglers who crossed back into Mexico and were allegedly helped by men dressed as Mexican soldiers who deputies say crossed illegally into the U.S.

One week later a Hudspeth County Sheriff's Deputy and a KFOX crew witnessed a second incursion in the area - Mexican officials have said those were soldiers investigating the first incident, but have not explained why their soldiers crossed into the United States.

Customs and Border Protection confirmed Tuesday Mexican soldiers were not involved in the first incursion. "The fact that we can sit down that we can talk, that we can explain, go over and share information, share intelligence, jointly investigate an incident, these are things that in the past it were very hard to do," said Aguilar.

Aguilar said this latest information will help both countries distinguish between real Mexican military and drug smugglers. "I've been in service now for 28 years and in those 28 years I have never seen the level of coordination and communication in relationships we currently have with the government of Mexico," said Aguilar.

But this doesn't mean the job of patrolling the border is safer. "The danger that we are seeing now, the violence that we are seeing now as it relates to the border, is being handled by the men and women of the Border Patrol and the other law enforcement agencies," said Aguilar.

Though they have confirmed that the Mexican government was not involved in the first incursion the investigation is still ongoing. Aguilar added that there are plans for the El Paso sector to receive over 400 additional Border Patrol agents.

As KFOX was the first to report, border sheriffs from across the Southern border will meet on Friday in El paso to discuss Operation Linebacker. The talks will include expanding the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition to the Southwest Border Coalition.
