"Field Of Dreams" To Become Reality

Organization Plans To Construct New Baseball Field To Accommodate Disabled Children

Ashley Bullard has been confined to a wheelchair since she was 3-years-old.

She has cerebral palsy. But now, at age 13, her disability hasn't dampened her spirit - or even her desire to play sports.

In fact, she is currently part of the El Paso Miracle League baseball team. But, there's a problem: She and her teammates must play indoors at a hockey arena.

"We have never played outside before because our wheelchairs and other assisted devices do not roll on the dirt," Ashley explained.

Now, the Miracle League is raising money to build a "field of dreams." The organization's goal is to raise $400,000 to construct a new outdoor field with special accommodations for disabled children.

Ashley's mother, Sharon McCormack, said the field will be "specially designed so it's seamless," allowing assisted devices to glide across the field.

McCormack also said the field will be specially made, so if a child does fall, they will be less likely to sustain injuries.

But mishaps are the farthest thing from Ashley's mind. For her and her friends, it's all about being able to play ball outside like all of the other kids in town.

"It is going to take a lot of time, but right now we are hoping for all the donations we can get because we really, really want to play outside. I can speak for all the children at the Miracle League," Ashley said.

In addition to the specialized turf surface, the new field will also include stadium lights so the children can play at night.

So far, the league has raised about $30,000 for the project. The league is asking for the public's help to meet its goal of $400,000.
