Hudspeth County Sheriff Discusses Washington Visit

It's been a long week for Sheriff Arvin West from Hudspeth County, who testifed this past week on capitol hill, about the two recent incursions in his area.

The first on Jan. 22 when Hudspeth County deputies intercepted a drug operation near the Rio Grande.

The other on Jan. 31, which KFOX caught exclusively on tape. Where men wearing what looks to be Mexican military uniforms illegally crossed the border.

"As we laid it out to them you could see the surprise in their face and then immediately after that the anger in their face, it showed to us that they are really listening and want to do something about it," said Sheriff Arvin West from Hudspeth County.

While lawmakers haven't decided what type of help they would provide to the border, Sheriff West says his priority right now is the safety of his officers since he and others have received death threats.

"Since the incident we have made drastic changes. I have had to move personnel around to obviously protect my own deputies and their families, obviously a big concern of mine is the safety of our officers," said West.

Which is also why he hopes that Washington will send more reinforcements.

"That's one of the key issues we need more man power, more boots on the ground to help with some of this stuff," said West.

But, Gov. Rick Perry doesn't want Sheriff West and other state law enforcement to wait.

"I am launching Operation Rio Grande. It's an initiative that will put together several state resources and law enforcement organizations to better secure the border," said Perry.

And West says he is grateful for any support he can get because he believes that the problems with the border are just beginning.

"Right now I believe we are in the eye of the hurricane and we are sill going to have another surge of problems after the hurricane and we are anticipating it and gearing up for it and we are going to be ready for it," said West.
