I.C.E. Agents Bust Alleged Smugglers
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 12 of 16 people Thursday and Friday of last week, with another already in federal custody facing similar charges.
Included in the round up are the alleged leaders of two separate organizations. One group was allegedly headed by Mike Price and his wife, Fabiola Moguel. The other was allegedly headed by Sam Jarvis. All three people are from Socorro.
Officials say both organizations have been smuggling hundreds of aliens from Central and South America into the United States over the past two years.
"Right now it's estimated they moved approximately 200 aliens per month, and the majority of these aliens are placed in the back of tractor trailers. There's been arrests of 79 in the back of tractor trailers. There's been arrests of 51 that are attributed to the organization," said Daniel Page, Acting Assistant Special Agent with ICE.
The alien-smuggling networks are believed to have profited at least $1.6 million. They would charge aliens anywhere between $1,500 and $6,000 to be transported into the U.S.
Officials have photographs of aliens loaded into the back of tractor trailers believed to be connected to these human trafficking rings. Federal officials said the illegal immigrants were hauled from El Paso to Dallas with no food and little water. Once they reached Dallas, Juan Rios, the alleged coordinator, would transport them to Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Illinois, Florida and New York according to ICE.
Truck drivers were allegedly recruited at the Petro Truck Stop on Horizon Boulevard.
Those indicted this week include: Mike Price, 53; Fabiola Moguel, 39; Ronald Dean Anglin, 54; Juan Carlos Rios, 31; Lluvia Christa Pantoja, 24; Pedro Cruz Moreno, 26; Melissa Santibanez, 35; Ruth Dolores Santibanez, 33; Pedro Escobar, 27; Marco Antonio Moguel-Lozano, 28; Sam Jarvis; and Michael Rodriguez-Rincon, 27.
ICE agents are on the three fugitives: Fermin Rodulfo Dominguez, 37, and Raul Lorenzo Lezama-Landeros, 35, who are from El Paso. The fugitive on the run is Maria Guadalupe Castro, 46, from Dallas.
All 13 people are facing charges of conspiracy to smuggle aliens. If convicted, the alleged smugglers face up to 20 years per count, a $250,000 fine and two to three years of supervised release. However, the outcome depends on how many aliens can be attributed to each group.
The arrests come after a two-year investigation assisted by U.S. Border Patrol agents. No illegal immigrants were arrested in the bust.
