Senator Weighs In On Minutemen

Posted: 8:52 p.m. MDT October 11, 2005

With 35 illegal workers found in just two days, the issue of illegal immigration is weighing heavily on local leaders.

As KFOX reported, a bill to bring hundreds of new Border Patrol agent to the El Paso region is awaiting the president's approval.

More patrols or not, the minutemen tell KFOX they will continue to patrol the borders, a promise that has one U.S. senator uneasy.

"Security is important, but I believe no matter what the good intentions may be of civilian volunteers that this is not a job for volunteers. This is a job for trained professionals and that's why I have proposed that we increase the number of Border Patrol and trained professionals to help with border security," said U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, (R) Texas.

Wednesday the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition will meet in Laredo to discuss a plan that would allow Texas police to arrest illegal immigrants.

El Paso Police Chief Richard Wiles says he applauds the group's creative thinking, but fears it would keep immigrants from reporting crimes if it's implemented.
