Helina Chemical Restrictions

Posted: 8:19 p.m. MDT June 11, 2005

A controversial chemical plant in Mesquite is facing some serious restrictions.

New Mexico's Environment Department has issued a compliance order, forcing the Helena Chemical Company to pay $200,000 for operating without an air quality permit.

The order also requires the fertilizer company to limit its operations to six days a week.

As we reported, residents who live near the facility say they've noticed a strong ammonia-like smell.

The state's environment department is investigating the extent of air and ground pollution at the facility.
