Carlos Garcia's Verdict Reached
Posted: 9:15 p.m. MST January 18, 2005
The jury deliberated the fate of 23 year old Carlos Garcia for just over an hour before returning this verdict...
"We find the defendant guilty of first degree murder."
Garcia was found guilty on all 13 counts against him, including murder and kidnapping.
As we've reported, Garcia was accused of killing 18 year old Jaime De La Cruz and 17 year old Isaac Delgado.
Their bodies were found in Anthony in January 2000.
The defense claimed throughout the trial that Garcia's confession of the murder was coerced.
"He is pretty calm and not that he is cold blooded, it's just that he knows that it is not over yet," said Emeterio Rudolfo, Defense Attorney.
"It's been a long time coming, it's been five years since this case started. Since the murders happened. It's been a long time for the family to have all of this all resolved both defendants have been found guilty of these brutal murders of these two young men," said Susan Reidel, Assistant District Attorney.
Garcia's co-defendant is already serving two life sentences for the crime.
Prosecutors say they will seek the maximum sentence of more than 100 years for Garcia when the punishment phase begins Wednesday morning.
