Americans Worried About Illegal Immigrants
As the big election day draws near, a new survey shows a majority of Americans across the country are concerned about illegal immigrants in the country.
The reason? What that means about how safe our borders are, and how it effects the economy.
Residents across the Borderland are even more concerned, considering how close we are to mexico.
The study done for Harvard's Kennedy School found that 98% of Americans are worried about what illegal immigration in the country says about the War on Terror, and also how much tax payer money is going to support these illegal immigrants.
Most El Pasoans are concerned about how illegal immigration affects the bottom line.
The study surveyed 18 million Americans who say tax payers have to pay too much for social services that support illegal immigrants.
Those surveyed also say that illegal immigration increases the likelihood of terrorism.
In an election year, this is a hot topic for both President Bush and Senator John Kerry on the campaign trail.
Each has their own plans to deal with the issue.
Whether they're voting for President Bush or Senator Kerry, many of the El Pasoans we spoke to agree something should be done.
Even though the study shows a majority of Americans are concerned about how the issue affects the state of terrorism in this country, many El Pasoans say they're confident the government will protect us from terrorism.
However, some did say more should be done to curb the amount of illegal immigrants that are able to cross the border.
