Survey: Americans Are Sleep-Deprived

People of all races have tossed, turned and weighed in on how their sleeping habits affect their daily lives.

It turns out, a lack of shuteye can be linked to poor social lives, infrequent sex and serious health issues.

A little over 1,000 adults across the country were surveyed, and according to this latest National Sleep Foundation poll, people are sleeping almost two hours less than they did 40 years ago.

The report found that 24 percent of respondents missed work or social engagements because they were too tired.

Additionally, as many as 26 percent of married people or couples living together reported being too tired to have sex frequently.

The annual reports also identified differences in the sleeping habits among blacks, white and Hispanic.

Dr. Bruce Nolan, medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said “The economic crisis is currently a common cause of sleeplessness.”

Staying on a schedule, taking the TV out of the bedroom and exercising regularly are just a few ways to achieve a good night's sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation.
