Will Tuition Go Up At NMSU?

With New Mexico lawmakers forced to cut the state’s budget in order to fix a multimillion dollar budget crises, one area that needed trimming was higher education. That means New Mexico university’s can be expecting less state funding, how much is unknown at this time.

“We don't have any specifics yet but we have been voicing our concerns,” said Travis Dulany whose the student body president at New Mexico State University.

NMSU’s new president Dr. Barbara Couture wasn't available for comment Thursday but gave KFOX the following statement:

"NMSU faces a challenging financial situation and our management of the current budget shortfall must be guided by our long-term goals."

Dulany said he know what the students want.

“We the students want as low tuition as possible,” he said.

But signs are showing a hike on tuition may be the only way the university can maintain the quality of education students are receiving. Couture said the university will need to protect strategic priorities in instruction, research and outreach. She also said the university will be looking to preserve core programs and functions while maintaining academic quality. And some students agree with this approach.

“I guess raise tuition, cause then you could still have all the teachers and get the same education,” said NMSU student Anthony Cantu.

“I would say definitely raise tuition cause you wouldn't want to cut programs making other students lose out on what they love to do or things they want to get involved in around school,” said NMSU student Alex Van Camp.

Dulany said no matter what happens, he wants to ensure the students voice is heard.

“When it comes to making potential cuts or potentially raising tuition, we hope we're included on all the discussions,” said Dulany.

“I think it's worth it in the long-run, paying a little more is definitely worth getting a better education,” said Van Camp.
