El Paso BBB Complaints Rise

The Better Business Bureau reports a 10 percent increase in complaints nationwide last year. And El Paso doesn't fall behind. With the series of storms El Paso has experienced, it hasn't been easy for consumers.

"Because you feel, I gave that money I had that money to fix my roof," said Virginia Tatum.

KFOX reported on Tatum in January when she said she was defrauded by Hartley Roofing. She paid the company thousands of dollars for a new roof and no work was done. Tatum is one of hundreds of customers who filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about a roofing company.

"Many times they have over promised and underdelivered because of the high demand that there is. You know, there's too much work for them to do but in the end this causes them to have complaints against their business," said BBB Communications Director Annabelle Estrada.

Estrada said the winds and hail storms have created a spike in business for roofers and auto repair shops and complaints went up as well. Estrada says families should rely on the BBB to find businesses they can trust.

"In the years to come, businesses will be more aware of their online presence and our online review. So we hope that they care more about that and work hard to have a better score with the BBB," said Estrada.

Estrada says nationwide the cell phone industry received the largest number of complaints. The cable and satellite TV industry and banks ranked two and three.
