Student Complaints Postpone UTEP Athletics Fee Vote

A vote to approve or deny a new athletics fee for UTEP students was delayed Tuesday night.

The student Supreme Court approved an injunction brought forth by some students with concerns about the election process.

The court ruled that an election commission was needed and had not been formed to supervise the election.

The proposed athletics fee would take mandatory student fees from $180 currently to $300 by 2013. The money would go directly to the athletics department, chiefly the university’s sports teams.

"They did not care about how this was being done; they only cared about slipping it by the students. I and a number of students actually feel that this was actually supposed to be slipped by us," said Isaac Perez Bolado, a student behind the injunction.

Supporters of the proposed fee, however, insist that the sports teams bring invaluable publicity and branding to the university and should be better funded.

Another election day has not been set. Stay with KFOX for continuing coverage.
