Veteran Says Not Enough Psychiatrists At VA

A local war veteran said he's not getting the mental health he needs at the Veterans Affairs Clinic, and he wants change.

Pete Baez said he's speaking for a lot of veterans when he says he can't continue to see temporary psychiatrists.

"I feel like I've been betrayed," said Baez.

Baez said he suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and he needs more help than what the local Veterans Affairs Clinic has to offer. He said he's been seeing different temporary psychiatrists for the last nine months.

"That one-on-one with the individual, I can't build that trust in them. Basically, those temporary doctor only refill prescriptions," said Baez.

"We lost four doctors in a couple of months and replaced them with tenants psychiatrists," said Dr. Loren Wilkenfelt, the chief of Mental Health Services at the VA.

Wilkenfelt said they are aggressively recruiting new psychiatrists. She says she understand the veterans' frustrations but says they can see other providers in the VA.

"We have a very strong mental health staff of social workers, psychologists, addiction therapists. Typically, they're not just seeing a psychiatrist, they're seeing other providers as well," said Wilkenfelt.

Baez said he wants to see more permanent staff rather than a high turnover rate.

"I'm just scared, not only for me but all the others, that some of us may be left behind," Baez said.

Wilkenfelt said they also have a new position, a psychiatrist nurse practitioner, who should help with the caseload.
