Mexican Residents Use Social Media Sites To Stay Safe

Bloodshed and violence have become all too common throughout Juarez and several other Mexican cities.

"They told us if we were in Progresso that while we were there, the people told us that it was safe to be there during the day, but not at night because there was violence that would go on," said Sandy Tidwell who travels along the border.

Residents in Reynosa, which is located just across the Rio Grande from McAllen, Texas, are now taking action.

They have set up a Twitter page. Minute by minute followers are posting about the gun battles happening right in front of them. They give warnings of where the most dangerous streets are and when it safe to come out.

"How do you know if the information is correct, you can't trust that at all," said Jeffery Park, of northeast El Paso.

"You really don't know when it's safe to go out anymore," said Eileen Renteria, of West El Paso.

It is a growing concern.

After all, the Internet has been known to be used for good and evil.

"They can't even trust each other. They can't trust the police, they can't trust the military that's trying to help," said Renteria.

Some officials worry that cartels could also be using the sites to find targets especially since the more than 200 followers are able to follow the page anonymously.

"Who’s sending it out, who can you trust? It might be somebody you can't trust. Who’s sending this out? That is what I’m curious about," said Tidwell.

Trying to keep their residents safe Reynosa's officials have set up a twitter account of their own to warn residents of violence in the town, but as many agree it is still hard for people to trust their own government.

Only time will tell if Juarez officials or residents will follow in the footsteps.
