Driver Wanted In Pedestrian Death Turns Himself In

A man who El Paso police said killed a pedestrian with his 1999 Chevrolet Camaro along Gateway East just past the Geronimo exit turned himself in.

Samuel Reyes turned himself in at police headquarters on Monday.

Police said they located the Camaro Saturday.

Police at the scene told a KFOX crew that just before 6:40 p.m. on Friday, 76-year-old Guadalupe Mijares' silver truck either broke down or ran out of gas on Interstate 10 east .

Police said when Mijares tried to cross Gateway East, he was struck by Reyes, and died at the scene.

Reyes did not stop and render aid.

"You are required by state law to stay and help the victim, so it used to called failure to stop and render aid, now we call it accident involving personal injury or death. It is a felony and we need that person to turn themselves in," said Sgt. Steve Keith with the El Paso Police Department on Friday night.

Reyes was charged with accident involving personal injury or death.

A police spokesman said this is the fourth pedestrian traffic-related death of this year compared to one at this time in 2009.
